My primary theater room consists of two ported subs and two sealed servo subs. This is a point to consider when using mismatched subs or purchasing a subwoofer. Some subwoofers are wireless; therefore, they don’t require much in terms of manual setup. For others, the process is relatively straightforward, but it can be easy to get lost along the way. The above methods are perfect for optimizing your bass output, but as we said earlier, it can’t be its own entity.

We are often asked about the difference between sealed and ported subwoofers, and which they should choose for their room. Custom painting your speaker grilles allows you to virtually hide your speakers in plain sight – they’ll blend in with your walls, ceiling, or cabinet for a seamless visual appeal. To connect multiple subwoofers, connect one receiver output to one subwoofer, then connect the second one to the other subwoofer. Alternatively, use an RCA Y-Adapter to send two parallel low-frequency audio signals to two separate subwoofers. If you don’t have an AV receiver, most preamplifiers have a subwoofer output. Connect your subwoofer in the same manner – connect the subwoofer by running the cable from the preamplifier’s output to the subwoofer’s line input. Adding multiple subwoofers to your speaker system means you can widen the listening area, giving you optimum bass in multiple locations. But as long as you are patient with your subwoofers and other audio equipment, and you use a little clever positioning and fine-tuning, you can make it sound truly great. For a bit more “punch” that requires extra bass (especially the bass & thuds from DVD or BlueRay video sound) 50W+ would be much better. While I realize you might not want to have to spend money & wait for the stuff to arrive, it’s definitely worth thinking about. Using the correct Ohm load means you’ll get the rated power – and as you might guess – the maximum volume possible. A good quality subwoofer can run into the thousands of dollars, although most people are content with one in the hundreds. It almost doesn’t need saying that the likelihood of 2 subwoofers being more expensive than one is quite high. Headroom is one of those audio terms that’s thrown around in the home theater world without too much meaning.

If the subwoofer has only one set of spring clips, the subwoofer must share the same receiver connections as the speakers. The best way to accomplish this is by using banana clips that can plug into the backs of each other rather than overlapping bare wire. Toproperly drive a subwoofer for it to work well, that’s different; in that case, yes, without question you need an amplifier of sufficient power to drive it well. This one’s easy to answer, although it’s important to be clear about power & amplifiers.In general terms, no, a sub won’t work ok without an amp. You can connect them just like you would a speaker, either to unused speaker outputs or also connect them alongside speakers already in use. You have a subwoofer or more than one subwoofer that can be wired for at least 8 ohms total.
Matching the speaker load to your home stereo just means matching it up with the best Ohm load that will deliver the power & volume it’s designed to produce. As you can see in my diagram above, if the speaker is over the rated Ohm spec, itwill work safelybut at the expense of delivering a lot less power and volume than you’d like. Just like car amplifiers & car stereos, home stereos have a minimum speaker load, stated in Ohms, that they’re designed to handle. Even if you have the right car subwoofer your amp needs to have enough power available to drive the subwoofer box.
If the subwoofer's LINE IN uses RCA cables and the subwoofer out on the receiver/amplifier also uses RCA, plug it in using an RCA cable. If the cable is split on one end (a y-cable for both right and left channels), plug it in the R and L ports on the subwoofer. If the receiver/amplifier also has left and right RCA plugs for subwoofer output, be sure to also plug in both to the receiver.
Then feed the subs by high level connections as a seperate stereo pair. (one to each channel L & R) It shouldn't make much difference whether you run the speakers off the same amplifier terminals as the subs. If you can't move your subs to improve bass performance, try moving your seats a couple of feet forward or backwards. The single biggest obstacle is that most home stereos, home theater receivers, and home amplifiers can’t handle the 4 ohm speaker load of many car subwoofers.

If you have two subs with no adjustments, but your receiver or processor has independent distances, follow the same steps just using the distance instead of phase for each one. Using the main front hook as your reference channels, adjust how master volume until the SPL meter reads 75dB when the left can speaker is playing the test tone. If your processor has independent multiple subwoofer outputs and trim controls, set the sub level to within a few dB of the other channels. Next reconnect the sub and disconnect hooking calibrated sub and repeat this process.
