Database Design Learn How to Design a Good Database

db design

Create a living document of your database schema that helps when architecting new features or onboarding new team members. Link and understand the different elements of your database and show how they interact with an ER diagram tool. Reduce complexity and visualize how your system entities connect and overlap, bringing agility to teams. The multi-step process stores data in a tabular form, which helps eliminate redundant data from the relation tables. Data is segregated into tables, such that every data item becomes a field and is shown as a column. For instance, a customer table might include fields like name, address, email address, and city.

Adding indexes and views

Read these tips on how to make good use of nullable columns for more information. Like any system, a database requires regular maintenance and updates to stay efficient and effective. Learning how to design a database begins long before you actually start the process. Initial planning and analysis are vital for a successful database.

Database designing

The steps in the development life cycle do not necessarily have to be followed religiously in a sequential manner. The Unified Modeling Language (UML) is another visual way of expressing complex systems created in an object-oriented language. Several of the concepts mentioned in this guide are known in UML under different names. Although indexes speed up data retrieval, they can slow down inserting, updating, and deleting, since the index has to be rebuilt whenever a record is changed.

By seeing the primary keys of every table in an entity-relationship diagram (ERD), the programmer writing a query will know how to access each table and how to join it with others. Security measures should be an integral part of your database design process. This includes robust access controls, encrypting data at rest and in transit, and conducting regular audits to detect and address potential vulnerabilities.

On the other hand, the physical model translates this logical design onto physical media using hardware resources and software like DBMS. When I’m working on a database design in DBMS, my main goals are to create logical and physical designs models for the proposed system. The logical model focuses solely on data requirements and storage without worrying about physical considerations.

At the end of this step, you will have a strong mission statement that you can refer to throughout the database design process. It will help you concentrate on your objectives when making important decisions. The reliability of data depends on the table structure, whereas creating primary and unique keys guarantees uniformity in the stored information. You can avoid data replication by forming a table of probable values and using a key to denote the value.

Referential integrity guarantees that columns involved in the relationship between two tables (e.g. primary and foreign keys) will have shared values. This means that the values of the columns in the secondary (child or dependent) table must exist in the corresponding columns of the primary (parent) table. The primary key is essential because it guarantees the uniqueness of each row within the table. In addition, the primary key is used to establish relationships with other tables in the database. While indexes can significantly enhance performance, they can also consume storage and potentially slow down data modification operations. Therefore, it's crucial to adopt a balanced indexing strategy by carefully considering which fields to index based on your database usage patterns.

The database design process

On the other hand, your physical data design model translates this logical design onto physical media using hardware resources and software systems such as a DBMS (Database Management System). Database Design, a collection of processes for designing, developing, implementing and maintaining enterprise data management systems, is critical to effective data management. A well-designed database is easier to maintain, ensures better data consistency and is cost-effective in terms of disk storage space. As the designer, I’m tasked with determining how data elements correlate and what information needs to be stored. A standard piece of database design guidance is that the designer should create a fully normalized design; selective denormalization can subsequently be performed, but only for performance reasons.

These include decision support applications in which data needs to be analyzed quickly but not changed. The following steps are suggestion of the data modeling process for Microsoft Access, a relational DBMS. At this point, we’ve discussed all the major components of database design in DBMS tutorials. It’s crucial to understand that database design isn’t just a one-off process; it’s an ongoing cycle that requires careful planning, implementation, and maintenance. Visualize your database schema and gain a birds-eye view of how different models fits together.

If changing a value in one non-key column causes another value to change, that table does not meet the third normal form. To guarantee that the data matches up correctly, you’d then have to include at least one identical column in each table, most likely the primary key. Attributes chosen as primary keys should be unique, unchanging, and always present (never NULL or empty).

The quality of a database has a direct impact on a system’s overall performance and dependability. It is important to consider data organization, standardization, performance, integrity, and more when designing a database to meet the needs of your organization and your users. A good database design can help save disk storage space by reducing data redundancy. Along with maintaining data precision and reliability, it allows you to access data in various ways. Moreover, a well-designed database is easier to use and maintain, making integration a breeze. A well-designed database is essential to guarantee information consistency, eliminate redundant data, efficiently execute queries, and improve the database’s performance.

In order to fully appreciate the above diagram, let’s look at the individual components listed in each step for overview of design process in DBMS. They can usefully join data from multiple tables or else show part of a table. While these forms explain the best practices to follow generally, the degree of normalization depends on the context of the database.

In other words, it outlines what your data will look like and how it will relate to other data. Normalization involves organizing data to reduce redundancy and optimize integrity. It's an iterative process, with each normal form (1NF, 2NF, 3NF, etc.) addressing a specific type of redundancy.

This can lead to data integrity problems, issues with query accuracy, and difficulties in updating that table. If you leave a table without a primary key in your schema, you run the risk of that table containing duplicate rows that will cause incorrect query results and application errors. Miro's infinite canvas and diagram maker with its entity relationship diagram shape pack is the perfect tool to help you diagram your database structure. For instance, a table named "Employees" may have fields such as Employee ID, Name, Position, Hire Date, and more.

Instead, you have to break it up into two one-to-many relationships. At the application level, other aspects of the physical design can include the need to define stored procedures, or materialized query views, OLAP cubes, etc. DB Designer development team is proud to announce the completion of MS SQL Server support.

Database Structure and Design Tutorial

db design

In the case of relational databases the storage objects are tables which store data in rows and columns. In an Object database the storage objects correspond directly to the objects used by the Object-oriented programming language used to write the applications that will manage and access the data. The relationships may be defined as attributes of the object classes involved or as methods that operate on the object classes. The process involves two primary stages – logical and physical data models. The logical model focuses solely on what data needs to be stored without considering how or where it will be physically stored.

Properly designed database are easy to maintain, improves data consistency and are cost effective in terms of disk storage space. The database designer decides how the data elements correlate and what data must be stored. The key objectives when designing databases in DBMS are to create logical and physical designs models for your proposed system. The logical model is all about focusing on the data requirements and the specific data which needs storing – without considering its physical storage.

Logical & Physical Design

Bringing a data model to 3NF maintains data integrity, reduces redundancy, and optimizes the storage space occupied by the database. The lower normal forms (1NF and 2NF) are intermediate steps towards 3NF, while the higher normal forms (4NF and 5NF) are rarely used. Read our article on normalization and the three normal forms for more information. By establishing relationships between tables using foreign keys and primary keys, we make use of the database engine’s resources to ensure data integrity. This also improves the performance of queries and other database operations.

Many-to-many relationships

As your business requirements change, your database design should be reviewed and updated accordingly. Regularly reviewing and updating your design ensures your database remains effective and relevant. When given the choice, pick an appropriate database management system based on cost, operating systems, features, and more. An index is essentially a sorted copy of one or more columns, with the values either in ascending or descending order. Instead of re-sorting for each query, the system can access records in the order specified by the index. This information will later become part of the data dictionary, which outlines the tables and fields within the database.

With a clear understanding of your requirements and identified entities, it's time to create your database structure. On small database systems, the process of database design is usually very simple and does not involve a lot of steps. The referential integrity rule requires each foreign key listed in one table to be matched with one primary key in the table it references. If the primary key changes or is deleted, those changes will need to be implemented wherever that key is referenced throughout the database.

How to Design a Database: Steps of Designing Database

Without them, you’re essentially navigating a ship without a compass. The physical data design model involves translating the logical DB design of the database onto physical media using hardware resources and software systems such as database management systems (DBMS). Diving into database design, I’ve realized there are various types of data models.

Essentially, data models define how the logical structure of a database is modeled. They’re fundamental to understanding how information is stored, processed and accessed. Database designing generally starts with identifying the purpose of your database. Next, you specify the primary keys and analyze relationships between different tables for an efficient data design.

When defining each column in a table, you must establish whether it supports null values. You should only allow the column to support null values if you’re certain that, at some point, the value of that column may be unknown, missing, or not applicable. If you’re new to database design, you may want to start with our article on how to learn database design.

Wrapping Up: Mastering Database Design in DBMS Tutorial

A systematic approach removes redundancy and unwanted characteristics, such as Insertion, Update, and Deletion irregularities. After dividing data into tables, information needs to be brought together in a meaningful manner. So, you can explore each table and Identify the connection between the tables. If required, you can add fields or form new tables to simplify the relationship based on the types of information.

For this reason, order numbers and usernames make good primary keys, while telephone numbers or street addresses do not. You can also use multiple fields in conjunction as the primary key (this is known as a composite key). Finally, you should decide which attribute or attributes will serve as the primary key for each table, if any. A primary key (PK) is a unique identifier for a given entity, meaning that you could pick out an exact customer even if you only knew that value. Within a database, related data are grouped into tables, each of which consists of rows (also called tuples) and columns, like a spreadsheet.

For example, a table of employees might have an attribute “manager” that refers to another individual in that same table. Once you know what kinds of data the database will include, where that data comes from, and how it will be used, you’re ready to start planning out the actual database. Attributes in ER diagrams are usually modeled as an oval with the name of the attribute, linked to the entity or relationship that contains the attribute.

The Beauty of 7N Hair Color: A Comprehensive Guide

7n hair color

First, using the guides, I figure out my natural hair color is a level 6 (Dark Blonde) with no grays. I want my hair lighter, but I hate seeing any warmth, or brassy tones in my hair. If you're worried that this color will be too dark for you, ask your stylist for some subtle balayage highlights like Lucy Hale's — which will soften any color. Bright blues, hot pinks, vibrant purples — more people are experimenting with temporary hair color like Overtone that lasts for just a few washes instead of committing to bleach and a salon visit. While platinum of seasons past has typically been icy and cool-toned, this fall is all about golden undertones, like Anya Taylor Joy. To help you try the best hair color trends of 2022, we chatted with celebrity stylists and Instagram influencers to get their thoughts on the latest and greatest hues.

The further you move away from your natural color, the more dramatic your results will look. It also means there may be some serious work involved in reaching your desired hair color. For example, if you’re going from dark brown (level 3) to a very light blonde (level 9), this will require the use of bleach, and it could take multiple sessions to achieve the shade you want. As much as we’re all for switching up your signature shade in favor of one of the season’s hair color trends, let’s take a minute to think it over.

Naturtint Permanent Hair Color 7N Hazelnut Blonde (Packaging may vary)

Once you know the color you want to rock, all that’s left is dyeing your hair. Intense red (RR) and violet (VV) shades are extra-pigment-packed for extra-vibrant results. When using a true red or violet shade on over 50% gray, mix with a Better Natured Natural (N) shade of the same level for maximum gray coverage. Ash (A) shades kick “ash” and neutralize warm, brassy undertones— when going lighter, but don’t pull them through porous ends, the color will end up more drab than fab.

We use the Global ISO standard which defines naturally-derived as plant or mineral derived materials and water that have undergone limited processing. The naturally-derived percentage varies between product lines and ranges from 92% to 99%. This cinnamon color is the perfect highlight shade for brunettes who want to go light without going blonde. This ultra-white shade Michelle Williams is sporting takes platinum blonde to the next level. The almost-silver hair color is trending all over Instagram as of late (blame Daenerys Targaryen). Make sure you grab some purple shampoo to maintain this icy hue. The two subtle strands of highlights framing Ciara's face add an instant touch of warmth, and draw the eye to her face.

The level system is a range of hair color shades from dark to light. This system of levels is used by hair color manufacturers to communicate the darkness or lightness of a shade. Better Natured hair color levels range from 1-10, with 1 being the darkest (black) and 10 being the lightest (lightest blonde). This piece-y and flattering early aughts method of highlighting is back in a big way. To keep things looking sunkissed and natural, always go for highlights two shades lighter than your natural hair color, like Chrissy Teigen.

They can assess your hair and skin tones to recommend the ideal 7N shade that complements your overall look. Keke Palmer's pinkish-red locks make for a bold, attention-getting hair color. If you're not ready to commit, temporary dye is a great way to try out a bright shade like this. If you want to mix up your brunette hair, try a deep shade of reddish-brown like Claire Foy. Now that you know more about finding the best hair color for you, perhaps you want to put your color theory knowledge to the test by picking out the hair color trend you’ll try next.

Since giving your strands a rest between bleaching sessions is always a good idea, it's a trend that happens to be gentle on your hair, too. Go with our warm beige series to add just a touch of warmth to levels 5 - 7. Natural (N) shades are the ultimate gray-slayers, and gold (G) shades give great gray coverage, too. For example, in the shade “8G,” the 8 stands for level 8 (Blonde), the G stands for tone (Golden). If you want to add warmth to your hair, opt for golden, chestnut, or bronze tones. If you find yourself having trouble deciding which tone to choose, you can add a variety to your hair with the help of highlights. 7N hair color comes in various undertones, including ash, golden, and beige. The warm, rusty color of Issa Rae's hair perfectly complements her skin tone.

Typically, if you have warm skin, you’ll want to opt for a slightly cooler hair color, whereas cool skin tones can look especially pretty with slightly warmer hair colors. When you pair opposites together, it can help balance out your look for an all-around aesthetically pleasing appearance. Hot off the heels of expensive brunette, expensive blonde is also taking the beauty world by storm. Like its brown counterpart, this lighter hair color is all about adding dimension and shine to create a luminous, warm blonde hue. If you want to get in on the trend, ask your hairstylist to give you a deeper hair color with subtle highlights. Hair colors range in level from black (level 1) to lightest blonde (level 10).

Fractal Design North XL Review: The Prettiest PC Case Gets Upsized

fractal design north charcoal black

Once again, I was blown away by the thermal performance of the Fractal Design North XL. Despite its wood-slatted front panel, plenty of air is able to flow into the chassis, thanks to the three 140mm Aspect 14 PWM fans. I’m tempted to buy some of these spinners to throw into my personal build. Because of the increase in volume, the top fan mounts can house a pair of large 180mm Fractal Torrent fans, although you won’t find these in the box. 2022 has been a big year for Fractal Design; the Swedish case company started off with the Torrent Compact, which was an impressive start. In the summer, we saw the Pop Silent, which was refreshing, as the case market has become saturated with mesh and RGB.

Our testing hardware to uses Intel’s 12 Gen “Alder Lake” platform, specifically a Core i KF, which is cooled by a Noctua U12s air cooler. The Fractal Design North isn’t perfect, but it’s undoubtedly interesting and unique, and if you love it at first sight, I don’t think any of the little quirks are going to put too many people off buying one. Fractal's North is a mid-tower ATX case that disguises itself as a pretty piece of furniture. Obviously, the most appealing feature of this case is its wood front panel. Now, I never took woodshop in high school, but this feels and looks like bamboo.

You might assume the mesh improves thermals, but there's also evidence (at least in some cases) that air coming in from the side can be detrimental to the front-to-back airflow path. The only other case we've tested recently with a mesh side panel was the Azza Aero 480, and that did not perform very well. Fractal's North, though, performed exceptionally well in our testing – especially with CPU thermals. The Core i K is set at a fixed 4.7GHz clock at 1.3v on all performance cores to ensure consistent power consumption across test scenarios.

ZM PC Shop

There are some limitations; for example, you can put the 240 mm radiator at the top, but the RAM height can be only 35 mm. Currently, the PC case market is saturated with chassis constructed of more glass than mesh, so anything else is a breath of fresh air. While the wood front panel is gorgeous and hasn’t shown signs of decay over the last year, I would like to see Fractal Design release additional front panels. For example, I’d love to see a brass front panel on this case to compliment the accents. The Fractal Design North measures up at 18.5 x 8.5 x 17.5 inches (HWD), so I wouldn’t try to fit an E-ATX board in here. However, this case can fit GPUs up to 13.98 inches (355mm), and our Gigabyte RTX 3070 Ti Gaming OC fits perfectly.

Despite the thumbscrews and still-not-quiet acoustics, the unique look and attention to detail outweigh those fairly minor issues, especially with its sub-$200 MSRP. Heck no, but for $180, the price isn’t outlandish for a case of this size, especially when you consider the fact it comes with three 140mm PWM fans and the wood accents as standard. If you want wood panels on competing Corsair cases, you’ll have to spend $70 or more, with the recently launched dual-chamber 6500 case line selling for $199 with no wood and no included fans. While the original North was fairly roomy inside, its GPU support was limited to 14 inches and its CPU cooler height to 6.6 inches (without the side fan bracket). The North XL bumps this up to support for air coolers as large as 7.2 inches(185mm) and GPUs up to 16.2 inches (413mm).

After all, adding luxury materials like wood elements to a case demands a higher price. But if the looks of the Fractal Design North don't tickle your fancy, it may be a hard sell. As such, it deserves the innovation award for its bold pursuit of design and some unique functionality, but would be hard to recommend otherwise. Because we’re reviewing the tempered glass model, our North XL did not include the side bracket for additional cooling. Instead, Fractal sent over their Flex 2 vertical GPU riser kit (an $80 accessory that’s sold separately).

Power4Pc BVBA

Letting the GPU run at 75% fan speed enables it to maintain its power target while sticking to one set reasonable fan speed, so that the temperature is the only variable. 5.25-inch drive bays were once a necessity for optical drives, but now are more or less gone. Following that collapse, the desire for glass (and RGB) everywhere came and is now going away as the thermal demand of high-end components went up and people began to take the need for airflow seriously. And now, because airflow is so important, too many cases are starting to look the same, which is frustrating. We'd opt for the glass-panel version instead of the mesh-side model we tested, but Fractal Design's North case has all the extra cooling and aesthetics it needs to attract buyers intrigued by its woodsy front face.

fractal design north charcoal black

Then we tested the ITX Ridge, which stood out for its console-sized frame and build quality. Finally, just as the temperatures turned frigid and the year was winding down, the company fittingly launched the North. Despite its price of $130, it stands out in a case market that’s become boring by delivering great airflow and stand-out looks.

And you can install two more 2.5-inch or two 3.5-inch drives in trays housed under the PSU shroud. Power supply space is ample, at up to 11.4 inches, although that space lessens as you add drive trays and / or a front radiator. The wood front slats are a darker walnut on the black model than the oak used on the chalk white variant, and I think it looks great. When I took the North XL out of the box, I was taken aback by the attention to detail in this chassis.

Fractal Design’s new case retails for $130 and comes in Charcoal Black or Chalk White. Staying on the topic of fan support, the North XL can fit as many fans as expected from a chassis of this size. The front of the North can fit up to 3x 120 or 140mm fans and the corresponding radiator sizes. If you don’t have the gargantuan Torrent fans as mentioned above, the top of the case can fit three 140mm fans.

It can be moved to a position above the rear fan mount, but we expect most will find its default location more convenient–and better for aesthetics as well, should you opt for the glass side panel. North reimagines the gaming PC, introducing natural materials and bespoke details to make gaming a stylish addition to the living space. Fusing design and airflow engineering, the case features fine-patterned mesh ventilation and an open front with real walnut or oak panels. The design is complemented by sleek brass or steel details and an integrated tab for easy access to the top of the case. Inside, North offers an intuitive interior layout and generous compatibility. A complaint we had about the original Fractal Design North when we tested it was its high noise levels.

North XL

fractal design north charcoal black

Another gripe I had with the original North was its lack of E-ATX support. Fractal Design's cases generally aren't all that quiet, and that's true here as well. During our full-speed test, we got an average of 53 decibels, which is, bluntly, quite loud. Even though the case is loud, let’s not forget that the side panel is mesh. So it's likely the tempered glass version of the North is at least a little quieter. Case companies often take an existing design and mostly (or sometimes only) change the front panel.

Mr PC Store

Overall, the North XL looks just as stunning as the original, but I would still personally still opt for the mesh side panel, as I feel like it fits the case’s aesthetic better than the tempered glass does. But if you do want to show off your internals, the vertical GPU kit certainly makes more sense with the glass panel. One of the few gripes I had with the original North was the thumb screws needed to remove the side panels, and that carries over to this larger model. I suppose it’s more secure than the pop-off pegs that have become increasingly common. But it’s also worth mentioning that the thumbscrews here are very stiff and require a screwdriver to remove. With the Fractal North, PC builders have access to something that is simple, modern and relatively affordable.

FREEZING HARDWARE

Instead of boring black or silver accents, the charcoal black version features brass-colored IO ports and feet. I don’t think I have ever been impressed by the feet on a case before, but there’s a first time for everything, I suppose. Speaking of the IO, the top panel features separate audio in and out jacks, two USB 3.0 Type-A ports and one USB Type-C 3.1 Gen 2 port. North reimagines the gaming PC, introducing natural materials and bespoke details to make gaming a stylish addition to your living space. Leveraging design to give you a better experience, its airflow functionality and intuitive layout make building and gaming both smooth and enjoyable. As long as the performance is decent, there's nothing wrong with more traditional basic black PC case boxes or aggressive RGB-and-glass gamer chassis.

Performance PC Pte. Ltd.

This isn’t the case (no pun intended) with the North, which is available in either white or black and with a mesh or tempered glass side panel. North XL combines a transformative take on the gaming PC case with a generous form factor. It fuses design materials with airflow engineering, to make performance gaming a stylish addition to the living space. Inside, it boasts a spacious, flexible, and intuitive interior layout so you can make the most of your building and gaming experience. For storage beyond M.2, there are a pair of 2.5-inch brackets behind the motherboard plate.

But it's great to have attractive and well-performing alternatives like the North, that blend into a living room in a living room instead of standing out like an alien artifact. The Fractal Design North looks attractive and would make a fine addition (even) to your living room. The use of natural materials for the front was a great choice because it stands out from the other chassis in the market. Also – you’ll find all the necessary features here, convenient storage options, or ample space for the installed components.

And it can be mounted in three different locations (bottom, middle, or top) to best suit the needs of your build. Behind the wood are two pre-installed Fractal Design Aspect 140mm fans, which can be replaced with fans or radiators up to 360mm. And, finally, the rear fan mount can fit a 120mm spinner, although the case only comes with the two fans up front.

Features of the Fractal Design North

It's airflow design is enough to meet the needs of almost all PC builders and its premium feel makes the case an ideal chassis for those who want a modern Scandinavian-styled PC without breaking the bank. The top of the North features a removable panel with a leather tab and the back for easier removal. The side panels are removed via two thumb screws, which is a bit disappointing for a case of this price, and it’s almost ironic when you consider the otherwise excellent aesthetics of this chassis. My preferred fans are going to be black Noctuas as I've used them in the past and like how quiet they can be. It's been many years since I built a PC and I don't remember the slightest thing about how to do an optimal fan setup for a case like this. A fine chassis for PC builders itching to forego RGB glitz in favour of genteel elegance.

TICHE PC

Ultimately, the Fractal Design North can support four 2.5 and two 3.5-inch drives simultaneously, which is very respectable in 2022. If you need more than that you'll generally have to look to a bigger case. A PWM fan hub is also included, mounted behind the motherboard tray by default.

Available in either chalk white or charcoal black, can the North XL land Fractal another notch on our Best PC cases list? We’ll have to test it to find out, but first, let’s take a look at its specs. Like its smaller, older Fractal North brother, the North XL is available in charcoal black and chalk white, with a choice of a mesh or tempered glass side panel. Because we reviewed the white mesh version the first time, it only made sense to check out the tempered glass black variant this time around. Behind the motherboard tray, you’ll find the usual cable tie points, a dual 2.5-inch drive bracket and two 3.5 or 2.5-inch drive trays.

It’s a strange time for PC cases, especially if, like me, you’re not a big fan of so-called “fishbowl” chassis with glass on as many sides as possible. Sure, on the better models, airflow has improved to the point where, with some smartly placed fans, you don’t usually have to worry about cooking your high-end components. Now Fractal Design is back with the North XL, aimed at beefier builds, with E-ATX motherboard support, and room for larger coolers and GPUs. The latter is particularly welcome because the Colorful RTX 4090 Vulcan OC just barely fit when we used the North to update our How to Build a PC article. Fractal was also able to keep the price of the North XL pretty reasonable. At $180, it’s not exactly budget, but it’s surprisingly affordable given its internal space and stunning external design.

The maximum CPU cooler height varies, depending on whether you install the fan bracket on the side. Without the bracket, the North supports coolers up to 6.7 inches (170mm), but 5.7 inches (145mm) with the bracket and fans installed. Enter Fractal Design, a case manufacturer that often finds itself on our Best PC Cases, and its latest (and hopefully trend-setting) North case. The North is an ATX mid-tower chassis that features wood slats on the front panel (backed by mesh) and the option for a mesh or tempered-glass side panel.

Embrace the allure of 7N hair color and let your true beauty shine through. From understanding what it is to choosing the right shade and mastering the maintenance, this article is your ultimate resource. Let’s embark on this exciting journey to uncover the secrets of 7N hair color. Beyoncé's hair color looks like mocha cafè au lait touched with a bit of gold. You're not the only one — stars like Dua Lipa have embraced this casual, low-maintenance trend.

Better Natured Permanent Liqui-Crème Color with 20-Volume Developer lifts 1-2 levels, depending on the shade you choose. The Sally Field blog is dedicated to highlighting all things beauty including makeup, fragrances, hair care, skin care and more with some lifestyle elements mixed in.

Want To Add A Bit Of Warmth?

TREND: Ash Blonde

Once you know the color you want to rock, all that’s left is dyeing your hair. Intense red (RR) and violet (VV) shades are extra-pigment-packed for extra-vibrant results. When using a true red or violet shade on over 50% gray, mix with a Better Natured Natural (N) shade of the same level for maximum gray coverage. Ash (A) shades kick “ash” and neutralize warm, brassy undertones— when going lighter, but don’t pull them through porous ends, the color will end up more drab than fab.

The Beauty of 7N Hair Color: A Comprehensive Guide

Outside of the office, you can find her killing it on the karaoke machine or listening to true crime podcasts. The product is easy to use and no odor and last until I need to cover gray again.

Tones represent how warm or cool a shade is and are indicated by letters. Levels represent how light or dark a shade is and are indicated by numbers. As an Editorial Fellow for Good Housekeeping, Katie covers health, beauty, home, and pop culture.

About Cosmo Prof®

The level system is a range of hair color shades from dark to light. This system of levels is used by hair color manufacturers to communicate the darkness or lightness of a shade. Better Natured hair color levels range from 1-10, with 1 being the darkest (black) and 10 being the lightest (lightest blonde). This piece-y and flattering early aughts method of highlighting is back in a big way. To keep things looking sunkissed and natural, always go for highlights two shades lighter than your natural hair color, like Chrissy Teigen.

We use the Global ISO standard which defines naturally-derived as plant or mineral derived materials and water that have undergone limited processing. The naturally-derived percentage varies between product lines and ranges from 92% to 99%. This product has transformed my hair, which now has perfect color, looks shiny, and feels soft but with more body than before. My hair even appears to be thicker (it had been become very thin and was falling out).

Lean into warmer colors like Mindy Kaling did and go for red-toned money pieces. You can lighten individual pieces of hair using two different methods. A pull-through cap offers easy, precise application and is perfect if it’s your first time doing highlights at home. If you want a more custom look, a paint-on method, such as balayage, will allow you to create symmetrical or asymmetrical highlights. More advanced highlighting techniques are best left to the pros, so call up your colorist if you’re looking to add balayage highlights to your hair. We hold ourselves to high standards and are proud to have the first permanent hair color to be certified by the USDA BioPreferred® Program.

You shouldn’t use another brand’s developer with our color as we can’t guarantee the final result. The natural undertones in 7N provide a blank canvas for customization. Good Housekeeping participates in various affiliate marketing programs, which means we may get paid commissions on editorially chosen products purchased through our links to retailer sites. Once you know your natural starting level, decide which way you want to go from here.

The basic version of Floorplanner is free but is quite limited and is only really suitable for amateur designers. For professionals, there are a number of different subscription options at different price points. Essentially, the more you decide to pay, the more features you’ll have.

Virtual Architect comes with an extensive library of 3D appliances, and exterior and interior furniture. The ‘Home Plan’ library can be used for design customization and is a really nice feature. For designers looking to save time, SmartDraw comes with several thousand examples and templates.

For home and hobbyist users, the sweet spot is currently around $49 for a do-everything app, rising to around $99 for a home design app with a really big object library and lots of advanced tools. It's possible to spend much more, but we think that for most people, there's no need to go beyond $99 unless you intend to make a lot of plans. A lot of 3D House Design Software is available in different versions at different price points, and free 3D house design software is also available. In fact, many tools are available in free 3D house design software versions, as well as more complex versions for professional designers and architects.
